Checklist for Proper Leather Upholstery Care

 

Vinyl or plastic upholstery requires minimum but routine care. Sponge the surface with household detergent whenever signs of soil appear-at least every three months on light, less often on dark materials.

 

Leather requires more devoted care to preserve its natural oils. For example, in addition to periodic cleaning with an approved cleaner, leather should be treated to a special dressing to replace oils that are dissipated by the atmosphere.

The treatment will also restore much of the original texture and flexibility of the leather material.

 

Scratches, chips, or other damage to your leather furniture may be repaired through a unique leather recoloring process in which color is sprayed on and becomes an integral part of the leather. This specialty service should be done by professional leather repair and maintenance experts.

 

These tips will eliminate many cleaning problems for your leather furniture before they occur.

 

1) Before cleaning your leather furniture with an approved leather cleaner and conditioner, pretest in a hidden spot on the piece of leather furniture for each color in turn for fastness.

 

2) Do not remove zippered leather covers when cleaning leather cushions. In case the leather shrinks, it will be difficult to replace leather covers.

 

3) "Browning" or discoloration of your leather furniture caused by water-based spillage or some cleaners can be removed by a professional techniques that draws stain material from the leather.

 

4) Use only approved synthetic cleaners and conditioners on leather furniture. Harsh solvents or paint remover will damage your fine leather.
